Reiki Healing Sounds

I started writing this article on healing sounds several times, but never got past a pile of notes gathering dust on my desk. This morning, as the publication deadline approached, I realized I had to get rid of my writer’s block. So I went down to my Reiki treatment room, got up on the table and began chanting sacred healing sounds as I placed my hands alternately on my solar plexus, heart center, throat center, brow and crown chakras.

Soft music was playing in the background and rather than being disruptive, my chanting seemed to enhance the music, as if a new composition was being created. The energies being generated were quite powerful, especially with the second set of sounds. I began to have chills and shakes as old repressed feelings were being worked upon, and then a release gave way to a deep feeling of joy and peace. Apparently, the biggest part of my writer’s block was lethargy from holding onto an accumulation of old energy patterns that were becoming ready for release. And in chanting, my voice expressed permission to allow the healing to take place.

The human voice is an incredibly powerful instrument for sound healing. When one is connected with Spirit, the creation of sound becomes intuitively modulated by the lips, tongue, mouth, throat, and breath, and also through volume and intonation. While breath control is helpful, chanting healing sounds is very different than singing. Fortunately, for most of us, it’s not about creating perfect pitch. It’s about creating the perfect sound for the perfect healing process. What may seem a little strange to the ear, is accepted internally as the perfect vibration needed in that moment. And subsequent intonations may change as healing shifts take place.

As I chant these sounds, whether it’s for myself, a client, or an animal friend, whether it’s in person, or in distant healing sessions, I find that the energies open me up more clearly, to be a better channel for more Reiki healing energy to come through. My brow and crown chakras open wide with vivid pulsations, as I become more aware of the processes unfolding and am guided from place to place and from sound to sound. Each sound is chosen for its vibrational healing capability. And each sound is toned accordingly to that very moment.

Some of the sounds that I use come from Karuna Reiki®. The other sounds come from an ancient Japanese system of sound healing, called Kotodama. Today, I used some of both for deep healing and clearing in my upper chakras. And then I used nurturing, harmonizing sounds for accepting myself with compassion. Most of the session was for connecting with Divine Mind, to get the creative process flowing. It seemed like I was chanting that vibration for an eternity. Then, over each chakra, I used the sound to heal the human fear of Personal Divine Empowerment, to completely bring that Divine essence into the core of my being. Finally, I chanted the sound for harmonizing all the chakras for completing that Divine alignment. I have to admit, I didn’t try to come all the way back. I didn’t want to. I wanted to allow these words to flow, while I lingered as long as possible in that eternal moment of unity.
